Checking In: Palazzo Sogni, Florence

A romantic, frescoed palazzo just steps from the Duomo.

Tucked around the corner from Florence’s Duomo, Palazzo Sogni is a romantic retreat in the heart of the city, just a ten-minute walk from Santa Maria Novella station. Set within a beautifully restored Renaissance palazzo, this intimate 30-room hotel combines centuries-old frescoes with playful contemporary design. Soft blues, blush pinks and richly patterned fabrics create a dreamlike atmosphere that’s a fitting tribute to its name.

I was lucky enough to be among the first guests to experience Palazzo Sogni, which opened its doors on October 1, 2026.

A Little Background

Dating back to the 16th century, the building was once part of Palazzo Testa, constructed by Florence’s influential Martelli family. Its transformation into a boutique hotel has preserved much of its historic character, including original frescoes and an extraordinary Renaissance courtyard.

Designers Elena and Giulia Sella worked with local artisans to bring the palazzo into the present, creating bespoke furnishings and interiors that complement its Renaissance architecture. The result is distinctly Florentine, but with a whimsical personality of its own.

Why We Love It

Palazzo Sogni feels like a little world of its own, despite its central location. One of its loveliest spaces is the Sala della Musica, an elegant sitting room where guests can enjoy a drink or afternoon tea beneath frescoed ceilings. From here, there’s also a balcony overlooking the hotel’s inner courtyard.

The courtyard is one of the property’s highlights, with an intricate Renaissance nymphaeum — an ornamental fountain inspired by ancient Roman grottoes — at its center. Traditionally attributed to sculptor Baccio Bandinelli, it’s a beautiful example of the architectural treasures hidden within Florence’s historic palazzi.

Beside the courtyard, the hotel’s restaurant, Giardino Segreto, is a jewel box of powder-blue interiors, patterned textiles and whimsical botanical details. Breakfast is served here each morning, with a generous selection of fresh breads, pastries, cakes, cheeses and cured meats brought to the table, alongside coffee, juice and an egg dish of your choice. The restaurant is also open for dinner.

The Rooms

The hotel’s 30 rooms and suites are individually designed, with original frescoes, high ceilings and a rich mix of textures and patterns. Sumptuous upholstered beds, fine Florentine fabrics, velvet cushions and bespoke furnishings give the interiors a romantic feel, while contemporary touches keep things playful.

My room was particularly spacious, with powder-blue accents carried through to the smallest details, from the patterned wallpaper and custom wardrobe concealing a complimentary minibar to the tea kettle and wonderfully comfortable slippers. There’s even a cheeky “Press for Champagne” button on the wardrobe.

The bathrooms are equally striking, with blue onyx, brass detailing and mirrored walls that almost disappear into the surrounding interiors. Santa Maria Novella toiletries add a lovely Florentine touch, with a delicate pomegranate fragrance during my stay.

The Details

Palazzo Sogni also has a panoramic rooftop terrace with striking views of Brunelleschi’s dome, particularly impressive given the hotel’s proximity to the cathedral. A spa offering treatments with Biologique Recherche products completes the experience.

With Florence’s major sights just a short walk away, Palazzo Sogni is an appealing base for a romantic city break. And with particularly attractive rates following its October 2026 opening, now is a great time to experience this new five-star address.
