Tropea is one of the most beautiful seaside cities I’ve ever seen. The uncontested jewel of Calabria, it is located along the magnificent Costa degli Dei – Coast of the Gods – likely the most underrated stretch of sea in all Italy. I fell in love with the town when I spent two weeks here during ferragosto soaking in the sunshine, swimming in the crystalline sea and eating my fill of hand-rolled pasta in the town’s many quaint restaurants and bars. Most people come to Tropea for the beach, which is truly unparalleled, but you shouldn’t miss spending time in the town which is lively and picturesque.

With its small alleys, rustic trattorias with al fresco dining and balconies that look out onto the water, Tropea is perfect for a romantic weekend escape but you could easily spend a week here exploring the region. This is a place where you’ll want to spend hours at the beach, enjoy a spritz down by the water at sunset and dine on fresh pasta in a pretty piazza until late.
