Perched on a hillside near the medieval towns of Volterra and San Gimignano, Monterosola is a contemporary winery that offers a fresh take on traditional Tuscan winemaking. The estate lies in close proximity to the highly-lauded regions of Bolgheri and Chianti and shares similar soil components with Montalcino, making it an ideal territory for producing Tuscany’s celebrated Sangiovese wines. Monterosola produces 70,000 bottles a year which reflect the region’s “micro-terroir”, according to the estate’s oenologist Alberto Antonini. The varietals include Sangiovese, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot red grapes; and Manzoni Bianco, Grechetto, Viognier and Vermentino white grapes.

First established in the early 1990s, the estate was purchased by the Thomaeus family from Sweden in 2013 which undertook significant construction projects to enlarge the facilities and turn Monterosola into the evocative property it is today. Armed with a deep-rooted passion for Italy and the help of local architect Paola Prati, the family of sommeliers built a state-of-the-art cantina (set upon 5 levels) and a visitors center to host wine tastings and more. With its large, modern spaces immersed in Tuscany’s natural scenery, the winery is lends itself to a wide variety of events, including art exhibitions, weddings, al-fresco concerts, corporate meetings and family gatherings.
